The STEM Day event held on the basis of M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University (SKU) in Shymkent was a resounding success. The event was part of the "Integrated Approach to STEM Teacher Training" project (#598367-EPP-1-2018-1-SE-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP) of the ERASMUS + KA2 program, which seeks to improve STEM education by training teachers.
Over 60 participants, including students, teachers, and students from the Shymkent Republican School "Zhas Ulan," attended the event from all over the region. On the first day of the event, an exhibition was organized for schoolchildren to showcase the latest models of military robotics, biological and chemical laboratories, and other innovative technology.
The STEM Day was opened by Madiyarov N., the Dean of the Higher School of Natural Sciences and Pedagogy, who delivered an inspiring speech. Omashova G., the project coordinator, informed the attendees that the university is developing an interdisciplinary innovative educational program titled “Physics and Informatics with the Basics of STEM Education.” She further informed that this program would be launched in 2020-2021, and the first admission would be held in August.
During the event, the project coordinators presented new educational modules and learning outcomes that the master students would have after completion of each module. They also encouraged bachelor graduates to apply to the program. The teachers of M. Auezov SKU presented mini-projects on physics, chemistry, and computer science to the secondary school teachers who attended the event, sparking their interest in innovative courses on STEM education.
Aueskhan Burkit, a senior teacher of the Department of Informatics, presented a portfolio on the methodology of teaching military robotics, which generated a lot of interest among the participants.
The STEM Day event was a huge success, with the participants expressing their desire to organize more such meetings and promote the introduction of STEM education at all levels of education in the region. The event served as a platform for sharing knowledge and promoting innovative approaches to STEM education, helping to bridge the gap between education and the socio-economic sphere.
